ILOCOS SUR, April 24, 2018 – The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Gallery of Athletes and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Philippine World Heritage Sites Mobile Exhibition at the Vigan Convention Center formed part of the 2018 Palarong Pambansa festivities in Ilocos Sur.

Installed for the seventh year, the Gallery of Athletes provides inspiration to young Filipino athletes as they take a peek into the journey of men and women who triumphed in their respective fields through the Department of Education’s (DepEd) flagship sports program.

“This Gallery of Athletes shall remind us of the champions which Palarong Pambansa has produced,” DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones shared.

With the slogan, “Success of Yesterday, the gallery features the stories of sports icons including Nathaniel Balajadia (arnis); Mark Anthony Barriga (boxing); Joseph Eric Buhain and Ernest Lorenzo “Enchong” Velasquez Dee (swimming); Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong (soccer); Dyan Castillejo (tennis); Lydia De Vega and Elma Muros (track and field); and Marlou Aquino, Danny Ildefonso, Samboy Lim, and Sen. Joel Villanueva (basketball).

Meanwhile, as part of its goal to promote awareness on ASEAN and the World Heritage Sites in the Philippines, the DepEd – International Cooperation Office (ICO) also brought the ASEAN and Philippine World Heritage Sites Mobile Exhibition to coincide with the Palaro.

Provided by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCAA), the exhibit consists of three parts: the World Heritage Sites and Living Cultures of the Philippines; the Water Festivities of Southeast Asia; and Inside the Southeast Asian Kitchen.

The ASEAN and Philippine World Heritage Sites Mobile Exhibition was officially launched at the DepEd Central Office on February 26, 2018, and is set to be toured to the 17 DepEd Regional Offices and select Division Offices and schools within the year.

“We must never forget that we are part of the ASEAN community, that we are part of the world,” the Education chief reminded everyone in attendance.

DepEd-ICO Director Margarita Ballesteros, DepEd Region I Director Alma Ruby Torio, and Ilocos Sur Governor Ryan Luiz Singson also graced the said occasion.

The exhibits are open for viewing of the approximately 50,000 Palarong Pambansa delegates from all over the country. (Report by Marvin Tacal, DepEd Region 1)
